The recent news in the UK gambling industry has been built broadly around the change in circumstance around gambling advertising. For a long time now, too, there has been a huge amount of interest in the UK Gambling Commission’ desire to make the entire industry a touch more sanitized. This has been shown in its extreme, with LeoVegas coming under the censure of a 6-figure fine from the UKGC.
This comes after a series of ‘misleading adverts’ and ‘successful social responsibility failures’ which is quite a serious charge. This has seen the company charged around £600,000, as well as being told to hand over any earnings made from the result of their ‘adjusted failures’ – this is a landmark moment for the industry.
2018 has been marked by the UKGC really pushing forward with their intent to be more stringent and strict on gambling laws. With a large series of charges made regarding their advertising, LeoVegas will now need to consider their marketing approach in general.
One of the most serious charges, though, was the failure to turn the funds of 11,205 players who had chosen to self-exclude from the service. This is a major blow for LeoVegas, who have recently enjoyed a huge boost in reputation.
As the UKGC continues to make sweeping changes to how gambling is handled and advertised, though, this might just be the start. For LeoVegas, it’s a wholesale transformation which will require a lot of change in-house.
