The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has for some time been a major talking point amongst casino gamers and users online. One of the main roles they play is helping to determine how valid an advertisement is. Recently, they decided that there was no longer any likely opportunity for ‘fairytale’ style themed games to exist in terms of advertising. This is mainly due to the potential appeal that they might have towards children.
This came after m88.com had featured a variety of games such as Fairies Forest and the Fairytale Legends series. With animation and graphical themes that would likely have been appealing to younger kids, the ASA has put the foot down.
The company ensures that all advertising that contained “unsuitable character” was removed and that the games would only be accessed on a valid and legitimate user account.
They also stated that the games had appeared on other operators, too. In the statement released, the ASA noted that: “We considered that fairies were highly popular with young children, particularly young girls. Furthermore, we noted that the wolf was heavily stylised with exaggerated facial features and included a long muzzle, big eyes, and a prominent nose.”
“We considered that the physical appearance of the wolf resembled similar characters from films and TV programmes aimed at under-18s, particularly children.”
In what is the latest example of a games site having to change to try and be more adult-specific and avoid potential advertising to children, this is another clear showcase of how the entire industry is on the brink of a massive change.
With more expected to come in the future, too, this only feels like the beginning. It will likely limit what can and cannot be made into a slots game, but it may also reduce the chances of children being negatively influenced by these games.
