As one of the largest names in the online casino industry, 888 are a major player and a commons starting point for many gamers. The company, though, has been embroiled in a fraught legal back-and-forth with the German authorities. This has taken a new step, as the very existence of 888 in Germany has been forced into uncertainty. This came after a court decision had fully prohibited the group from being able to work or take part in the country.
The German Federal Administrative Court has fully pushed 888 into uncharted territory. All online betting, casino gaming and poker operations within Baden Wurttemberg must come to an end, effective now. This is a major decision, and it’s expected to shave millions off the 888 name in revenue, given its immense popularity within the German online casino gaming industry, and across the rest of Europe.
At the moment, it’s expected that the company will look to appeal the decision. Given that around 7% of the company’s revenue comes from its work in Germany, it will be interesting to see what kind of challenge is made about this particular decision being made.
“We are using local counsel to help us make a decision as to whether we challenge this ruling or not,” said Itai Freiberger, the 888 Chief Executive.
Without a formal regulation and taxation plan to follow in Germany, this decision could pose to have major ramifications for 888 long-term.
