Karen Bradley Creates Waves with Anti-Advertising Complaint

For some time now, the UK Labour Party has been pushing for a justified ban on casino gambling on football shirts in British football. However, the Labour Party – as ever – appears to have a rebel on their hands in the form of Karen Bradley. With nine of twenty top-flight clubs in England sponsored by gambling companies and much more across the UK, there has been a significant backlash against the wide-spread advertising taking place.

The push for the ban stems from the combination of football betting and betting firms convincing people to take part in gambling on the teams involved. It’s all very simple, and the party has made it a proposal to ban all casino advertising on football shirts. However, the Culture Secretary Karen Bradley, whose constituency is near Bet365-sponsored Stoke City in Staffordshire, has come out to reject her approval for the plan.

Speaking about the move, Bradley was clear that she was against it.

“I think the supporters of Stoke City would probably be quite concerned if they were to discover that Bet365 could no longer and shirt sponsor, and they may wonder where they would be able to purchase players from.” She said.

While the fact that sponsorship income is a major part of football club sustainability, the fact that Stoke City brought in over £100m in TV money for their participation in the Premier League slightly skews that. Most clubs who are taking the gambling sponsorships in the top flight receive massive volumes more from the TV companies; they could easily take a stand against the advertising of betting.

For new UK casino sites being advertised to veterans like Bet365, though, this vital sponsorship reduction could cause problems in the industry at a later date.
