In one of the least considered parts of the British exit from the European Union (Brexit), gambling discussions are now underway. UK casino gamers have been able to enjoy a combination of different benefits as part of their EU membership. One such indirect benefit, though, was for the people of Gibraltar to have access to the UK gaming circles.
Recently, Gibraltar’ Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, praised the UK Governments decision to help ensure that this border-free access would continue. With UK financial services and gaming remaining accessible by people in Gibraltar until 2020, this should help to stave off what has often been a complex but under-discussed part of the Brexit debate
The hope is that, by 2020, the Government will have found a good deal to help make sure regulation can continue. The UK market makes up a whopping 90% of the Gibraltar gaming experience, with licenses from all over the industry held here. This should act as a positive sign, then, that not everything is going to need to change as a result of the Brexit decision.
Since Gibraltar is technical a British territory, it has full gambling access in line with any British citizen under the EU single market rulings. Fears were sparked that Gibraltar-based gamers would miss out on the future thank the change, but it now appears that, until 2020, a compromise has been found.
Of course, what comes after that, we’ll just have to find out!
